I am not me 2012
Johannesburg, South Africa
The human self is denied existence by the repressive labor market for immigrants...
The performance sought to offer that part of the human self that is denied existence by the repressive labor market for immigrants...
In this project, I collected and substituted the posters of illegal immigrant laborers with human skills offered as a profession to be sold with handwritten contact numbers of the same laborers around the city of Johannesburg to mislead and confuse the locals for a couple of weeks.
The project concluded with a performance conducted with a group of migrant laborers on the highway of Johannesburg on selling personal skills with placards announcing the offered personal skill at hand. As a tiller, like a plumber, as a friend, as a human, as a mother, and as a dreamer; different identities were explored by me along with immigrants through their daily struggles.
